The Center for GeoInformatics (C4G) at Louisiana State University (LSU) is seeking entry-level land surveying personnel in support of geodetic research in Louisiana and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The position will act as Surveying Field Support Personnel and will work with a Professional Land Surveyor and should have knowledge and skills related to Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) field surveys and computations using Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology. The successful candidate will apply these technologies to measure point locations and elevations, establish positional benchmarks, and assess the precision and accuracy of such measurements under a variety of challenging environmental conditions. Appointment to this full-time position is grant-funded for a minimum of five (5) years.

Nature of Work:

This position involves the execution of field surveys in support of research activities conducted by the LSU Center for GeoInformatics. Tasks include establishing accurate and precise horizontal and vertical control at select locations across the state. Surveys will be conducted using GNSS technologies, geodetic leveling, total station, absolute and relative terrestrial gravity measurements at Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS), National Spatial Reference System benchmarks and Louisiana Spatial Reference Center (LSRC) eccentric benchmarks to improve geodetic modeling of future datums and NSRS Modernization. Vertical deflection measurements will be performed using a High-Precision Digital Zenith Camera System. Benchmarks and gravity marks will be installed as needed. Additional tasks include research and analysis appropriate for developing quality assessment and quality control (QA/QC) applications for the surveys. Training will be provided on operation of all equipment.

5% - Creates, edits, and manages maps using a variety of cartographic and geographic information system (GIS) software platforms (e.g., Trimble Business Center, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.).

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or another closely related field. The ideal applicant should have experience as Surveying Intern (surveyor in training) with knowledge of fundamental surveying principles and practices involved in the conduct and practice of land surveying; collecting data, creating maps and managing survey projects and knowledge of various GIS and surveying software packages. The Surveying Field Support Technician will be required to work in most weather conditions (excluding severe weather), sometimes near high-volume traffic, stand or walk for long periods, and carry up to 40 pounds of surveying equipment over wet, rough, and/or steep terrain as well as work indoors on computers and perform nominal equipment maintenance.
