The City of Virginia Beach is seeing a Survey Aide to that will perform a variety of tasks in support of an engineering survey party involved in system horizontal and vertical data base management, field verifications and all types of basic survey work.
Duties include but are not limited to: • Assist Land Surveyors in conducting land surveys relating to surveying boundary line/right-of-way surveys, topographic surveys. • Perform routine minor calculations of distance and elevation. • Communicate survey information accurately. • Work outside in adverse conditions, extreme vegetation and rough terrain.
Requires high school or GED plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as surveying work, construction, engineering drafting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.
Preferred candidate will have National Society of Professional Surveyors/American Congress of Survey and Mapping (NSPS/ACSM) Certified Survey Technician - Level I or two (2) years of experience as a Survey Aide. Municipal government experience Experience operating surveying instruments Experience with survey equipment such as Total Stations and Data Collectors or similar AutoCAD Civil 3D experience Experience reading and comprehending construction plans Experience with Microsoft office software. Demonstrated knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry Basic knowledge of various land surveying activities including topographic, construction and hydrographic surveys, horizontal and vertical control surveys, boundary and physical location surveys. Basic operational knowledge of Survey Total Stations and Data Collectors, levels and GPS receivers
